Residential Renovation In Windhoeok

MR Architects was approached by the client to renovate and modernize an old modernist house on a property in the flourishing suburb of Eros Park. The original inward-focused house is well oriented, and its basic configuration had the potential to be developed into an exceptionally comfortable house. The property is located on the ridge of Eros Park, with stunning views of the Auas hills to both north and south. The brief was to retain the existing structure, but to open up and enhance the living spaces and bedrooms to celebrate the potential of the site. The original living space was cellular in design and devoid of outdoor living areas. The new design created an open plan connection between the lounge/dining rooms and kitchen, with a scullery to the side away from view. The outer shell of the building was opened up to invite the natural landscape into the house. The living space creates a successful connection between the southern courtyard space and the northern garden. A large covered outdoor entertainment area and pool on the north creates an inviting outside living space that enhances the joy of Windhoek’s pleasant summer evenings. Additional pockets of outdoor privacy created at the southern courtyard and the veranda, enables the different members of the family of five to choose where to relax and enjoy the views, depending on the time of day.

A music room to the south creates a separate quiet space for the husband to practice his music without interruption from the boisterous young children. A consultation space was designed for the wife’s medical related profession, including reception, waiting and consulting rooms, separate from the house with its own street entrance. The space can with minimal effort be configured into a granny flat if later required. Additional separate accommodation was provided for the nanny and a shower space for the gardener.

The north facing bedrooms were renovated to allow for maximal passive airflow and good solar shading to prevent overheating in summer. Windows were enlarged and glass doors open out to the north veranda and front garden. The ventilation system was designed in such a way as to provide a built-in window bench in each bedroom, with a comfortable bay window feel, creating a quiet reading space looking out onto the Auas mountains. The master bedroom was enlarged with an en-suite bathroom and dressing space fitting for an upmarket residence. All bathrooms were placed on the south of the house, with occupied rooms to the north, thus ensuring positive thermal gains due to good passive design.

The renovation successfully develops the potential of the property by fully incorporating the natural possibilities and prime position of the site, and has developed the property into an upmarket residence suitable to the area in which it is located.
